Phase 1 – Organizing

Community Engagement

Since May of 2024, our Mora Plaza Nueva project team has worked hard gathering input from the stakeholders and citizens of Mora County. We’ve engaged with you through meetings, surveys, pop-ups, and conversations. What did we learn? First, and most importantly, we learned that Community has to be central, no matter how this project evolves and blooms.

This is a word cloud created from the answers to an open-ended question in a survey we took at events last summer. The single word most used by the 90 people who answered is “Community”.

We’ll be reporting more details in the coming days. One thing we need to do is “build our team”.

Build the Team

Our next step is to build the team that will push this series of projects forward. We are looking for community champions to take part in one of the workgroups described below. Only those with a stake in Mora can push these projects forward in a way that best serves the community!

Management and Operations

Working with professional input, the Management and Operations workgroup is to

  • Create a plans for some form of community ownership of new facilities, both new construction an acquired existing buildings. This group will focus on cooperative ownership, both for-profit, non-profit, or both
  • Coordinate with other workgroups, create a cooperative agreements and/or management agreements for new facilities built as part of the Mora Plaza Nueva project
  • Coordinate with the other workgroups to draft sustainability plans for common areas and open public spaces

Cultural Affair

This group oversees the cultural, historical, and interpretive elements of the Mora Plaza Nueva Project. The workgroup develops the content of the proposed visitor center/museum, historic markers, model acequia, and any other parts of the Mora Plaza Nueva project that may intersect with Mora culture, identity, or herencia.

Mora Plaza District

In close coordination with Mora Creative Council, this group will figure out what the Mora Plaza District is – what it means for businesses, building owners, and people who live within the boundaries, how it would work – Is it a rebranding of the MainStreet area sort of like the Railroad District in Las Vegas MainStreet corridor? Do we want it to become a Metropolitan Redevelopment Area? …

Design

The aim of this workgroup is to establish design standards that reflect the culture and architectural vernacular of Mora

  • Draft graphic standards for public signage and other exterior public elements
  • Mora Plaza District – draft a set of architectural design standards for voluntarily adoption for those seeking financial and technical support
  • New Construction – draft a set of architectural design standards for new building construction to be included in the Mora Plaza Nueva project, for both commercial and residential purposes
